JA 8 HISTORY: Jan. 30th - Feb. 3rd

This week we continue to examine some of the major battles of the American Revolution those of interest to us this week are the Battle of Saratoga, the capture of Savannah, the siege of Charleston, and the Battle of Cowpens.

MONDAY: Reading and animated map of the Battle of Saratoga. Questions to answer over reading that will be due on Tuesday.

TUESDAY: Questions from Monday are due. Computer lab assignment. Using an NPS activity on Saratoga, you will determine facts, analyze maps, and art about this historical event. Go to www.nps.gov/nr/twhp/wwwlps/lessons/93saratoga/93facts1.htm read each section until the last and answer questions.

WEDNESDAY: EXPLORE RESULT OVERVIEW. Do NOT miss this important day. We will go over your results from your Explore Test and what those results mean for you.

THURSDAY: Computer Lab work on NPS assignment. Explore your career interest on http://www.explorestudent.com/. Assignment will be due at the end of the block today.

FRIDAY: Very quick exploration of the Capture of Savannah, the Siege of Charlston, and the Battle of Cowpens.

Flexibility Overview

Weather the Storm

Fibrous roots anchor a palm tree during a storm, and the trunk bends instead of breaking in the wind. These characteristics allow the palm tree to survive and help speed recovery afterwards.
Similarly, a person must adjust to the changes life brings. Tasks take longer than expected, plans do not materialize, your supervisor’s direction changes, or someone else does not deliver as promised.
These changes can cause fear, anxiety, and frustration. Many try to rearrange others or insulate themselves from disappointment, but flexibility does not involve controlling the outcome or avoiding commitment.

Get Ready

Flexibility begins with clear vision and a willingness to apply principles of good character in each situation.
Identify a project’s purpose, and plan so that you can organize efforts, measure progress, and prepare for adjustments. Ask questions so that you understand project goals. With this knowledge, you can adapt and get the job done, even if circumstances alter the process.

Make Adjustments

When the unexpected or the inconvenient happens, take responsibility for your part. When circumstances or others cause delays, communicate with those affected. Then do what you can so that you will be ready to finish the job as soon as possible.
When you do not know what to expect in a social setting, discern how you can honor others and put them at ease. Worrying about your image will only distract you from responding appropriately.

Developments change the opportunities available to you. A clear goal and a firm commitment to practice integrity will help you identify and take opportunities. Without this vision, a person will lose direction and have difficulty making decisions when circumstances change.
Determine what really needs to be done. Identify what character qualities apply to the situation, and discern how you can demonstrate those qualities as you do what you need to do each day.
Develop the knowledge and skills to make accurate adjustments, and overcome the “setbacks” that could derail your vision.
