This week we continue our study of some of the famous battles of the Civil War. This week we will examine and discuss the Battle of Shiloh, Antietam, and Vicksburg. The tide of the war is shifting in favor of the North or Union.

MONDAY - TUESDAY: The Battle of Shiloh. Readings, discussions, and videos segments. We will watch the battle play out on an animated map website as well. http://civilwaranimated.com/ click on Western Front - Shiloh.

WEDNESDAY - THURSDAY: The Battle of Antietam and the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Readings, discussions, and there will be questions on both Antietam and the Emancipation Proclamation that will be due on Friday. Some time will be given in class on Thursday to work on them. They will be due at the end of the block on Friday.
FRIDAY: Work time to complete the assignment on Antietam and the Emancipation Proclamation.

This week we continue to examine some of the major battles of the American Revolution those of interest to us this week are the Battle of Saratoga, the capture of Savannah, the siege of Charleston, and the Battle of Cowpens.

MONDAY: Reading and animated map of the Battle of Saratoga. Questions to answer over reading that will be due on Tuesday.

TUESDAY: Questions from Monday are due. Computer lab assignment. Using an NPS activity on Saratoga, you will determine facts, analyze maps, and art about this historical event. Go to www.nps.gov/nr/twhp/wwwlps/lessons/93saratoga/93facts1.htm read each section until the last and answer questions.

TUESDAY: A closer look at the Missouri and 1850 Compromises, as well as the Dred Scott Supreme Court decision, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act.

This week we backtrack to why Russia dropped out of World War I in 1917 about the same time the U.S. entered the War.

Monday - Wednesday: Why did Russia drop out of the war? The story of the last Czar of Russia why he abdicated his throne and the rise of a new government under Communisim. The key players - Lenin and later Stalin - who were they? How did they get to power? We will look at what life was like for the Russian people before and after the revolution. We will read handouts, view websites, and watch video clips.
Thursday - Friday: The social and political changes that came about as a direct result of World War I. We will look at the new attitudes, social revolutions, etc. We will be introduced to "Life in the Roaring 20's.

This week we will finish our study of World War II with an investigation into the Holocaust that targeted not only the Jews, but also the gypsies, communists, mentally ill and physically handicapped and others.

Monday - Wednesday: We will read handouts, view websites, and watch video segments about the victims of the Nazi Holocaust. How many did it claim? Who were the targets? Can we comprehend how this could have happened? The United States Holocause Memorial Museum will be one site we will be using, especially the "For Students" section. http://www.ushmm.org/

Thursday - Friday: Introduction to the Cold War Era. What is a Cold War? How long was it? And, what events in history were part of it? We will focus on Friday on the Arms and Space Race that was part of the Cold War and the division of Europe and the "Iron Curtain."

This week you should finish your 7th Unit of study in your foreign language. Once you complete Unit 7, you have earned a B in the class. Over the final weeks you will be working to earn an A. Some are already done with their 8 Units! Congratulations! We have had some diligent workers this semester and I am so proud of you! This Friday will be another Benchmark Grade point.

We are scheduled to move back to Main Campus on Friday, Dec. 9th. We may have to close down our lab on the Wednesday of that week (Dec. 7th). We still have plenty of time for ALL to earn an A if that is necessary. Thanks for your hard work in Rosetta Stone.

This week we will look at the end of World War II and V-J Day. We will look at the development of the atomic bomb and its use on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. Why did the new President, Truman decide to use it to end the conflict? What were the short and long term effects of using them?< Monday: The bombs development and why President Truman decided to use this basically untested new wearpon to force Japan to surrender.

This week we focus on the End of World War I. We will look at Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points and the inclusion of them into the Treaty of Versailles, the formal document that ended WW I and laid the groundwork for World War II. We will also look at what would have happened if Germany had been the victor of World War I.

Monday: We will look at the "What If ..." and how Wilson, the U.S. President, came up with his 14 Points.
Tuesday: We will look at the terms of the Treaty of Versailles and if its conditions were carried out. We will learn why it laid the groundwork for World War II.
Wednesday - Friday: You will create a Glogster on the End of World War I and the Treaty of Versailles. You will have 3 days in the computer lab to work on this. Waisting time in class is NOT advised. This will be your last chance to raise your project grades before the end of the semester.

This week our Junior Academy 8 students will be taking the two part ACT/Explore Test. The results from this test will give the students an indication of their interests and how well they are prepared in Enlgish, Mathematics, Reading, and Science - not only for high school, but for college and higher education as well. It will also provide the school and teachers with the academic areas that need more attention for the students in high school. The non-cognitive portion will be given on Tuesday and the subject tests will be administered on Wednesday. It is imperative that ALL JA 8 students are on time at 7:30. No student will be admitted to test rooms once the directions begin.

Monday: Rationing during World War II. We will finish this topic with an in class activity and finish our readings on the subject.

TUESDAY - WEDNESDAY: THE EXPLORE TEST WILL BE ADMINISTERED.

Thursday - Friday: Internment in America. Readings, video, slideshows of the internment of Japanese-Americans after Pearl Harbor was attacked. We will also look at letters sent by children in the camps to their friend who was a librarian.

This week we will focus on the Reconstruction Era. We will look at how the South resisted change to their social order with the Jim Crow Laws and the need for the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution. We will decide of the freedmen were any better off after the end of the war.

Monday - Wednesday: Readings on the 3 Plans for reconstruction of the nation after the Civil War. One reading you can find at http://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/reconstruction/introduction.html as there will be questions from this reading. Those questions will be due on Thursday. We will watch a video from Discovery Education as well.

Thursday - Friday: Assignment from Tuesday is due. Resistance to change by former Confederates. The Freedmen's Bureau, the Jim Crow Laws, and the Klu Klux Klan. We will also discuss how the Civil War Amendments were intented to bring change in the South.Readings and discussion in class. These topics and discuss may go into next week on Monday.

This week we begin on the Invasion of Poland and the start of World War II in September, 1939. This is conference week. You should attend your own conference. Short day schedule for Tuesdady through Friday.

Monday: The invasion of Poland. 2 readings and video documentary about the Invasion of Poland by the Nazi Army.

Tuesday: Germany's attack on France through Belgium and Denmark and the Fall of France after just 6 weeks of fighting. The Vichy France that the Nazi regime set up. There will be video and readings of the invasion and an eyewitness account of what happened.

Wednesday - Friday: The Battle of Dunkirk and the Blitz of London. Reading and video segments on both. The European Homefront begins rationing and social changes.

REMEMBERING 9/11

The terrorist attacks that took place on this day ten years ago have forever changed the lives of all Americans. It shook our confidence, placed fear of terrorism in our hearts, altered the lives of over 3,ooo families. Today's younger generations will never live the life other older Americans lived prior to that day. Even those not there will always remember where they were when the news broke about the attacks and how it affected them as an individual and an American. We also need to remember those people killed that day who were from other nations that were in the towers, on the plane, and at the Pentagon. We will remember them always.

This week we conclude our study of the historical aspect of our early government under the Articles of Confederation during and after the American Revolution and the writing of the Constitution to take it's place.

Project: Monday through Wednesday you will be working in the computer lab creating the "National Gazette" incorporating the articles for a newspaper you have been writing in class for the last week or so. Projects are 20 percent of your grade. You will use Microsoft Word and my template to create a two column newspaper that has downloaded images that are resized to fit, text wrapping, justified columns, article titles that are center spaced, and columns that are filled all the way to the bottom.

Thursday - Friday: Review of the events leading up to World War II. The Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression, the rise of totalitarian dictators (Mussolini of Italy, Hitler of Germany, and Stalin of Russia.) This is in preparation for our study of WW II.

This week we continue our study of some of the major battles of the American Revolution. We will start with events that followed the winter spent at Valley Forge where the Continentals became a well-trained army.

Above is a map of the Seige of Charleston. Below is a painting of the battle in the South at King Mountain which changed the course of the Revolution

Monday: Reading and discussion of the Battle of Manmouth. The new British Commander in America, Clinton and his decision to move to the South and win the battle against the Revolution. Quickly we have short readings on the Capture of Savannah and the Seige of Charleston. We will watch several video clips and a full video as we cover the above topics.

Tuesday - Wednesday: The Battle of Yorktown readings and discussions. There will be a video segment and then questions to answer for Thursday at the start of class.

Thurday: The war's end discussion. Then we shift to look at how the Revolution Period and after were governed under the Articles of Confederation. There will in-class work on the Articles.

Welcome to the new school year. I am looking forward to working with you as we investigate the past and the present. We have a lot to cover this year, but we are going to have fun. You will be doing all kinds of projects using various technology through out the semester. You and I will have to work hard to make sure we are successful. They say that the road to success is always under construction. However, we are going to get part way down that road. As we study history in JA 7 and 8, remember always to ask yourself a "What if" question. For example, "What if I had been at the Ford Theater when Lincoln was assassinated?" "How would I have reacted and what emotions would have risen up inside of me?"

Together we can have an amazing semester. Let's bring history alive. Pearl Buck once said, "If we are to understand today, we have to search yesterday."

This week we will work on our 2nd project for the semester. You will create a Glogster, an online poster, on tenements and the life of the immigrants who lived in them in all major cities during the great influx of immigrants after the Civil War.

Monday - Wednesday: Research time and work time to create your glogster. You may log in outside of school from any computer. Use http://schooldude29.edu.glogster.com/ to log in with your username and password provided. This is an important grade make sure you complete this assignment. You are to include no more than 4 photos and 2 video downloads. There should be links from your photos to websites that explain what your photo is showing (usually the site you got it from). Graphics and background should be appropriate to the topic and time. Text on the Glogster is important. You need to tell us about tenements and how they impacted the people living in them.

This week we continue to examine how our country was governed during the Revolution and in the first decade after our victory over England. You will be starting your first project for the semester this week. You will create a "Yesteryear Newspaper" using Microsoft Word. Make sure you follow directions on sheet given in class. Time will be provided in the computer lab.
Monday: Vocabulary List #5 and crossword puzzle. The Constitutional Convention, who was there, and the main disagreements they ran into. Video on the issues and problems they discussed and resolved.

Tuesday: In-class writing, The basics of this new form of government being proposed, the compromises, and how it still protected us from a tyrannical government like under King George. This writing will be used in your project.

Above are pictures from the Antietam/Sharpsburg Battlefield. This battle gave Abraham Lincoln the opportunity to issue The Emancipation Proclamation which was to affect the remainder of the Civil War in favor of the Union.

MONDAY - TUESDAY: Vocabulary List #3. Introductory readings on Antietam/Sharpsburg with comprehension questions, essay questions, and cloze activity. The tide has changed. These will be due on Tuesday. Detailed readings with questions that will be due on Thursday.

WEDNESDAY: The story behind the Emancipation Proclamation. Why was it issued and what were the ramifications of it for the Confederacy. Now what was the difference between the Confederacy and the Union.

THURSDAY-FRIDAY: The Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi. The Union gets another victory shortly after Antietam. Now the last phase in the Anaconda Plan is beginning to happen. Vocabulary Quiz #3 on Friday.

We continue the battles of the Amercian Revolution. This week we examine the Battle of Saratoga, the Winter at Valley Forge, and the British deciding to head into the southern states to defeat the colonists. There were actually two battles near Saratoga approximately 1 month apart.

MONDAY - TUESDAY: Vocabulary List #3. Introduction to Saratoga and how it connected to the city of Philadelphia with reading, comprehension questions, essay questions and a cloze activity. Then, more detailed readings on Saratoga. Our class will do a chart together on the more detailed readings. Mondays assignment will be due on Tuesday at the start of the class.

WEDNESDAY - THURSDAY: The Winter at Valley Forge. Desperate to rivive his men and their moral what could Washington do as the made their winter camp at Valley Forge? Readings, questions, and video. Questions will be due on Friday for the Valley Forge readings.

FRIDAY: Vocabulary Quiz #3. Valley Forge assignment is due. The British take the American Revolution into the southern colonies. Brief details on some of the major battles of this campaign.

This week we will look at world poverty and hunger as a continuum of our discoveries of world population growth.
Monday and Tuesday: Living on $500 a Year. Group work, discussions, and readings. There will be questions on poverty based on our activities.
Wednesday and Thursday: Continue world poverty if needed, then begin world hunger and why it is so prevalent around the world. Activities and videos.
Friday: PROJECT ASSIGNMENT - YOU WILL CHOOSE EITHER WORLD POVERTY OR HUNGER AND CREATE A GLOGSTER THAT CONTAINS MAINLY TEXT AND VIDEO/PHOTOGRAPHS. THIS PROJECT WILL BE DUE ON WEDNESDAY OF NEXT WEEK. YOU WILL HAVE FRIDAY AND MONDAY TO WORK ON THIS IN CLASS.

This week we begin our study of the major battles of the Civil War beginning with Bunker Hill which is pictured above in the artist's rendition.
Monday and Tuesday: We will set up our portfolios and get our mygradebook logins. Readings on Bunker Hill and video clips as well as questions on Bunker Hill that will be DUE on WEDNESDAY.
Wednesday and Thursday: Questions on Bunker Hill DUE. A quick introduction to other battles until The Battle of Shiloh. Readings and video clips on the Battle of Shiloh. Questions or activity on this battle that will be due on Friday.
Friday: Shiloh assignment DUE. Catch up time and Accelerated Reading time in class for this semester's goal.

This week we continue the American Revolution by examining some of the battles, starting with the Battle of Breed's (Bunker) Hill which is represented in the painting above.

Monday and Tuesday: You will set up your portfolio's and get your mygradebook logins. The Battle of Breed's Hill reading and 3 short video clips about the battle in Charlestown, Maryland. Questions will be given to answer. They are DUE on WEDNESDAY.

Wednesday and Thursday: Our focus will be the Battle of Trenton in New Jersey between the British and the colonists. There will be readings and video clips. Questions to answer that will be due on Friday.

Friday: Catch up time if all has not been done on our battles. ACCELERATED READING DAY. Time to get reading for your goal for the semester.

Welcome to all of my new classes: JA 8 A History, JA 7 B History, Issues of the 21st Century, and Rosetta Stone students. The first few days this week we will be getting to know one another. You will learn my classroom rules, and what we will cover this semester. You will take your Pre-Test this week, as well as begin with our first area of study as required by the Arizona State Standards. Next week there will be specific details about what we will cover each day and when homework is to be given. At times, this will be available in your class folder found on the left side of this blog. They are marked JA 8 and JA 7. It is not always possible to post the readings and worksheets there, but whenever possible it will be done. I look forward to our first week of class!

MONDAY - TUESDAY: Mono Lake, California. Gerneral information and as class we will compare to Aral Sea in the Soviet Union after World War II. Did we do a similiar thing like they did? How was the areas ecosystem altered and is it being rejuvenated and restored today?

THURSDAY: Post Test. We will grade test in class and compare to the PRE-TEST from the beginning of the semester. Post in portfolios as well as Star Reading results. Portfolio completion and distribution.

This is our final week of class.

MONDAY - TUESDAY: A quick overview of the Vietnam War. Key terms and names. How war was entangled in pre-WW II. Why the U.S. got involved and the "domino theory." If time, we will look at the Viet Cong and their tunnels which helped make fighting them difficult.

WEDNESDAY: Review for our Post Test.
THURSDAY: Post Test and in-class correction. We will compare this result with the Pre-Test taken at the start of the semester. Completion of your portfolios. Star Reading and Post Test results.

FRIDAY: Final points and thoughts on Vietnam. May get to tunnels on this day.

Monday: Introduction to the Totalitarian dictators of the 1920's and 30's. Group assignment using Wiki's explained. Logins given. Group preparation.

Tuesday - Wednesday: Tuesday research. Wednesday is compiling your Wiki Page for the CIA. Make sure you follow directions. That is part of the assignment.

Thursday: Presentation of Wikis by groups.

Friday: Review of how World War I laid the foundations for World War II.

Monday: The Korean War. Readings, discussion, and video segments. The current issues in Korea stem from what happened in the Cold War Era.
Tuesday - Thursday: Cuban Missle Crises of 1962. We will use website in my Academic Link Listing on this blog. Movie: Thirteen Days, starring Kevin Costner. Behind the scenes White House activities during this crises that brought the world the closest to a nuclear war during the Cold War.
Friday: Beginning of Vietnam War.

This week we will focus on the Russian Revolution which led to the formation of the Soviet Union. Pictured above is a propaganda poster of Lenin who would eventually take control of the revolution and become the first leader of the newly formed Soviet Union.
Monday - Wednesday: Discussion, reading, and videos of the events of the Russian Revolution that began with the assassination of Czar Nicholas. The key players in the revolution and the ultimate leader, Lenin.
Thursday: Transition of power in the Soviet Union to Joseph Stalin when Lenin suddenly died of heart failure in 1923. Who was Stalin and what role would he play in World War II.
Friday: Movie for final day before break.

Monday: We will finish our study of the Nuremberg Trials by reading and discussing the Doctor's Trial, one of the many trials held after World War II at Nuremberg, Germany. There will be questions over this material that will be due on TUESDAY.
Tuesday: THE COLD WAR. What was it? Why it happened. Introduction to the major events of the Cold War Era. Discussion and reading of division of Germany and Berlin and the development of the Iron Curtain.
Wednesday: Escape attempts to the West from Eastern Germany and Berlin. The Arms and Space Race aspect of the Cold War.
Thursday: The Korean War also known as the "Forgotten War". Begin movie, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Friday: Finish movie from Thursday.
